Google’s Duplicate Internet Content Filter In Action

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

keyword elite

If you don’t believe Google’s Duplicate Content Filter exists, I have Dramatic Proof their Internet content filter exists and it’s very effective.

On July 5, 2005 I published an article entitled “7 Top Ways to Avoid Link Theft” which was picked up and included as content on other websites.

Before the article was released I checked on Google whether any results already existed for the exact phrase “7 Top Ways to Avoid Link Theft” and there were no listings for that term.

Over the next few weeks I monitored through a search query on Google how many results appeared in Google for the title of my article. One week after publication there were 6,760 results listed in Google, a week later it was 14,100 and it reached a peak of 17,000 results by July 26, 2005.

4 weeks after publication the results in Google had fallen slightly to 16,600.

Almost 6 weeks after publication the results listed in Google had fallen to 44.

In a matter of less than two weeks the number of search results on Google.com for the title of my article had gone from 16,600 to just 44.

In case you’re thinking this is because all these other websites dropped by article and replaced it with other content I should add that a search on Yahoo.com on the same day still showed 14,300 results for my article.

What’s more of these 44 results on Google, more than half consist of listings from the same websites. In other words some sites have the same article duplicated on different pages on their website.

So Google’s Internet Content Filter is not used to remove duplicate listings from the preferred websites it chooses to keep in the search results.

On August 28th, 2005 8 weeks after first publication I distributed the article again to a new list of article sites to repeat the process. After 6 weeks the same article had reached a peak of 5,620 results on Google. Less than 2 weeks later the results had fallen to 217.

For me this was dramatic proof that Google’s Duplicate Internet Content Filter is active and very effective. If you’re wondering if other major search engines have a duplicate content filter I can confirm that Yahoo certainly does. The same article which was once listed on 14,300 sites on Yahoo, has fallen to 344 over the same time period.

From these results it would seem Google takes about 6 to 8 weeks to remove duplicate content using its Duplicate Internet Content Filter.

But the question remaining is just how does Google decide which out of over 16,000 results does it keep and which does it reject?

I have witnessed situations where my own articles appear in results on other websites, but are not listed in the results for my own website.

So clearly Google does not take into account who the originator and author of the original article was when deciding which sites will remain in its search results.

It also seems to have nothing to do with where Google first finds the article.

Some articles I have published to my website for several weeks before releasing them for distribution to other websites.

In that time the Google spiders have visited my site several times and Google has had enough time to work out that the article was first found on my site.

It would be interesting to see if it’s possible to work out what factors Google is using in its Internet Content Filter to decide which results to keep in its listing and which ones to remove. But that’s for another article.

Long Tail Search Engine Optimization

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

keyword elite

What is long tail search engine optimization? And how will it help your internet business?

The theory is simple really. You can make just as much money or maybe more out of the less clicked keywords than the more popular keywords for your given product or service.

Although this may have not been feasible some years ago, with the advance in many keyword and analytical software programs, it is now possible.

So lets examine the theory a little more.

The premise is that by knowing many or even all of the keywords and phrases that bring in say 20 to 30 percent of your traffic, you can capitalize on this by meshing or organizing these keywords together which then leads to a snowball effect on the search engines and creates many more rankings.

As you build more and more of these keyword pages or blog postings, your incoming traffic will start to climb and within a given period of time, 50 or 60 percent of your traffic can be supplied through these many additional higher rankings or “long tail” optimized keywords and phrases.

Such a shift away from having to “compete” with many other websites in your business field does and will bring many benefits.

1. The option of removing the use of some advertising completely.
2. The option of minimizing some advertising and campaigns.
3. The option of scaling down search engine optimization campaigns.
4. Due to the expansion of keywords and phrases, the option to add additional and or up-sell products.
5. With more pages, the use or larger use of monetized advertising could be used. i.e. Google Adsense.

This is by far a minimum list of all the benefits that such a “long tail” campaign may bring however the main points being reduction in costs and increase in profits.

Combine this with the current low prices of placing new material online and the minimal fees required to have new content written in economically growing countries, you have a very cost effective marketing plan.

Lastly, one of the main focal points or benefits of such a campaign would be the major search engines themselves.

Constantly scrapping over high targeted keywords, is off course accepted by the search engines, as long as you always stay within their rules and requirements.

What the search engines do actually love… is on topic, keyword rich content pages and lots of them!

Submitting many of these “long tail” keyword pages will then lead to many first page rankings, thus helping your whole website via the downward flow of a higher ranking score. In turn, this helps all pages, even those that have a high level of competition and may have previously required search engine optimization.

At the end of the day, a very well thought out SEO marketing campaign is about utilizing all options available for maximum return. For your business, “long tail” search engine optimization may just be one of those options.

Importance Of Area SEO Strategies For Business

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Localized searches on search engines are becoming more and more widespread within the Area SEO community. Customers are choosing to use Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, and the rest over their traditional paper Yellow Pages. It takes too much time and effort these days to open the Paper directory and search and search alphabetically for the business you would like to find.
Some users stick to online yellow pages and search for a topic of interest. Most searchers may not be seeking a business but information. When they search online they may end up finding area seo content within a page full of information that they are searching for and end up using or contacting the business because it is where they located their pertinent area seo information.
Out comes the search engine philosophy of Localized Area SEO. A potential customer opens his or her favorite search engine and types in their city, state county or zip and the business type or information they are searching for. Based on this it is important to see how a company must be optimized for their local seo area. If they are not listed in the search engines on the first page and are not marketed for their Neighborhood, Area, City, or state there is little or no chance of them being found by a searcher online. Regardless of the business type model it has become required to be found online when someone is searching.
There are also at least two types of possible searches and results being found online these days. The customer is either looking for a localized search based on location or a general search based on web search. In an area seo perspective both of these are equally important. For customers searching for businesses online Localized search becomes important to be listed with directories for local businesses. When a customer searches for information based on a local area seo search web search localization becomes the key target. When customers for instance in Palm Coast Florida seek to find a local Seo professional so they can meet and communicate their desires in person, they would type in Palm Coast SEO. The same obviously applies to all locals in the nearby area such as Daytona SEO. Since geographically these areas Palm Coast and Daytona are fairly close, a marketing professional would chose to target both of them equally. A localized customer in search of an seo company would not type Florida SEO and the market is too general and would include results they would not be interested in.
For an SEO professional although it may be a national market that they strive to achieve it is equally important to be listed in their localized search so that potential local customers will be able to locate their products and know they are locally listed.
In part two of Local Area SEO we will discuss the importance of understanding the customers target market to achieve best results for Area SEO.

Google Slams Spam

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

As the diligent Chief of internet submission company, Submission Company, search engine Submission Company, I am constantly watching the evolution of the Google Maps protocol.
In recent weeks to months it seems that Google has begun taking some drastic measures to curb the use of their gmail service for the dissemination of spam. At first it merely appeared that Google was tightening its quality requirements for listings on the Google Maps, (Google’s Local Business Listing Center). Google is always anxious to provide its customers quality information about the products and services they are seeking.) While one can only speculate, it is likely they were concerned about people using tricks to get high rankings on their local business listings. Their thinking may have been that companies using various techniques to feature keywords in their listings, may have been moving ahead of businesses more qualified to provide the services the online shopper was looking for. Google laid down a number of guidelines as to how to fill out individual text fields on their applications, and made it clear that listings not compliant with these new guidelines might be removed from the local listings. Apparently, this trend is only one step in Google’s war against unethical Internet practices.
In a move that is sure to upset many Google Maps users, Google now requires that all new gmail accounts, not coming from a non-gmail email account, must be verified by text message sent to a cell phone. Would be gmail users not in possession of a cell phone are advised to borrow one from a friend. This new system is being called G-mail beta. One wonders how long the test will continue. Google has apologized for this new stringency and explained that the move was needed to curb the use of gmail by spammers who have been using gmail for their email advertising campaigns.
Lately, in a another more drastic move, Google is tightening the belt when it comes to verification of new Google maps accounts. It appears that the Google computer is being programmed to recognize more and more spammy business submissions, right at the start. And these submissions are being flagged, and held for review I decided to add back single keywords to see which ones would be accepted by the Local Business Center, without triggered another flagging. I only added back “emergency mobile locksmith,” and the listing was again flagged. The idea that a listing should be flagged for such an innocuous keyword is extremely consternating. I looked on various discussion boards but couldn’t find anyone else with my experience. Until otherwise proven, I am convinced that Google is cracking down on the locksmith industry, because of spam, and may even be placing a quota on the number of times a keyword can be used in a given geographical area.
As more and more people register on the Google Maps, and as Google creates more and regulations to protect the quality of the local business listings, it is more and more of a challenge to get top listings. Google has created a number of helpful articles and videos for businesses wishing to list their company. But for business owners who do not have time to list themselves, or for owners and professionals alike who are looking for ways to be compliant with Google, and yet successful in getting high ranking on the maps, the additional guidelines create new challenges. For new up to date ideas on meeting this challenge, check out “4 Hours to a First Page Listing on Google Local” an e-Book with constantly updated suggestions as to how a business owner can be compliant and competitive in the ever changing Google Local Business Center Directory.

Search Engine Optimization Isn’t Rocket Science

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Introduction
.
So you have completed your website, great! Now how are you going to attract visitors? If you do not let them know you’re there, your visitors will never find find you. How are you going to sell products when users don’t know that you exist? SEO will make your website noticeable on the internet, and this small guide will help you bring targeted visitors to your website.

Optimize your website
The most important part of your website is quality content. Search engines (such as google) will crawl your content and index it into a database. If your content does not match the product you are selling, you will not attract targeted visitors. It is therefore very important that you choose your (key)words very carefully. For instance, if you sell calculators on the internet, make sure you mention the words calculator, calc, math and more calculator related words on your website. However, be careful not to mention the words too often, or search engines might think your website is spam, which will result in a very low rank (search engine position) within the search results.

Linkbuilding
When more websites link to your site, the more attention you will get from search engines, which results in higher ranking. When you create and receive links from other websites to your website, make sure important keywords are used as anchor keywords in the hyperlink. If you sell calculators online, use a link such as; “buy calculator” instead of “click here”.

Target your audience
Leave your link on website where your potential customers meet, for instance forums or discussion boards related to your website. Do not spam your website as this will be noticed by crawlers and will eventually result in a blacklist entry.

Offline targeting
Be sure to market your website offline as well. Advertise in local newspapers, tell everyone about your website, etc.

Add a sitemap to your website When you want search engines to crawl your entire website, the best thing to do is adding a sitemap to your website.

Make sure searchbots can read your website
Searchbots can only read plain text.websites. No matter how beautiful your flash animation is, searchbots cannot read the content inside that animation. Therefore, try to avoid Flash animations on your website when there is content involved. Same story goes for JavaScript.

Do NOT use frames
Never use frames to design your website! Lots of search engines simply skip webpages with frames since they are a difficult to be seen apart from each other by visitors. For instance, if your framepage would consist of menu.html and content.html and your visitor would land on content.html, he would not have a menu to navigate through your website.

Stay away from bad neighbourhoods and don’t spam!
Do not be tempted into leaving your link on abandonned guestbooks, forums or spam your link on every website you can find. Do not exchange links with spammy websites (such as pharmacy websites) either. The risk exists that google will classify your website as a spamsite and will block your website from any search results.

Optimizing With Firefox

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

One piece of software any optimizer should love is Firefox. Now some may say “Why Firefox, it’s only a browser?” Yes, it’s a browser, but one that supports a big variety of plugins, some of them very useful for search engine optimization. So let’s see what those plugins are:
keyword elite review
1. SEOpen ( https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/570/ ): this is one of the best and most used Firefox seo plugins, and has many tools that make it a favorite of mine. So let’s see what it can do:

* in Google it can check for: backlinks, indexed pages, related pages, cache and PageRank.
* in Yahoo and MSN: backlinks and indexed pages.
* for Alexa: overview, traffic details, backlinks and related sites.
* keyword density of the most used words on the page.
* DMOZ checker: see if the site is included in the directory.
* check for robots.txt.
* validator to check your page for errors (it uses the validator from www.w3.org).

There are other things, but these are the most important.

2. SEO Links ( http://www.webmasterbrain.com/seo-tools/firefox-extensions/seo-links/ ) is another extension I use everyday. When the extension si active and you hover over a link a tooltip will appear that will show you Yahoo, MSN, and Google link popularity and ranking data for the URL and anchor text pair. When you’re simply browsing this can be annoying, but you can simply deactivate it with a right-click!

This could be very easily used to check your search engine rankings for a certain page, and here is how: write up a list with all the keywords and keyphrases that you want to rank for, and then link those words or phrases to the web pages associated with them!

Now every time you want to check your ranks activate the SEO Links extension and hover over the links — you will see where your pages are in Google, Yahoo and MSN.

3. Don’t waste anymore of your precious screen real estate just to find out what your PageRank and AlexaRank is! SearchStatus ( https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/321/ ) can sit anywhere you want (I keep it in the status bar) and you’ll receive the precious info at a glance. But this little tool can do a lot more than that:

* it shows what metatags a site has
* checks for backlinks and indexed pages in Google, Yahoo and MSN
* it shows the robots.txt file
* keyword density report function
* and best of all: the highlight “nofollow” links will show you what links will be followed by search engine spiders — very useful when you want to submit your site to a directory and don’t know if it will matter from a seo perspective.

So in case you’re not using Firefox, go get it! It could be your best friend when it comes to search engine optimization!
